|
| Mrs. Kim Buehler, Assistant Principal |
Unique Offerings: Starting with the 2008-09 school year, U.L. Light Middle School mathematics classes will be two periods totaling 82 minutes instead of one 46 minute period. The staff and administration of Light as well as the district administration and Board of Education decided that this change is in the best interest of our students as we are now able to provide our classes with an additional 36 minutes of mathematics instruction each day all while not spending a single extra penny to make this happen! We were able to effectively and efficiently utilize the teachers and resources that we have in the building to maximize student learning opportunities.
Besides adding an extra math period, we now have an eight period day instead of a seven period day as had been the case the last several years. We were able to accomplish this by shaving several minutes off of each period to create room for an extra period in the day.
Uriah Luce Light Middle School offers the following opportunities for our students: Students may participate in high quality instrumental and vocal music programs; A READ 180 Language Arts program is available; Study Tables are held before or after school Monday through Thursday each week so that students may receive one-on-one or small group assistance from a licensed teacher outside of the school day; We boast an adolescent skills course titled Lions Quest which was developed by Lions Club International. During the 2007-08 school year our adolescent skills classes raised money and performed a number of projects ranging from a Toys for Tots toy collection drive to several fundraising campaigns for the Humane Society of Greater Akron to writing letters and creating a hand-print version of the stars and stripes for the courageous Men and Women of the United States Armed Services who are currently serving abroad. Students may run for Student Council, be a part of a Globals-qualifying Destination Imagination team, attain membership in the National Junior Honor Society, and participate in the Spelling Bee. As 7th graders, our students make an annual trip to Camp Manatoc for Outdoor Education in late May, and then as 8th graders, they set out annually to our nation’s capital, Washington D.C. Last but certainly not least, Light students may also choose to tryout and/or participate in a number of extracurricular sports including Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Basketball, Wrestling, Track and Field, and Cheerleading.
Want to Know More About Preparing for College?
Last fall, the Ohio College Access Network (OCAN) launched a statewide campaign called KnowHow2GOOhio. Because all the access programs in Summit County are working collaboratively, the Summit Education Initiative submitted and subsequently received one of 10 KnowHow2GOOhio grants.
The KnowHow2GO campaign is targeting students in grades 8 through 10 in order to raise their awareness about the steps needed to prepare for and go to college. Big dreams and good grades aren’t enough to get into college. There are actual steps you need to take. Don’t wait. The Summit Education Initiative can help. Click on the link below to learn more.
