Highland Middle School teachers will be writing articles about what is going on in their classrooms on a rotating basis.  Check here periodically for updated news.

Highland Middle School 8th Grade Science Classes

We would like to thank the Barberton Community Foundation for their continued support of our community and our students. This year they provided the 8th grade science classes at Highland with equipment so our students could experience their world through hands-on experiments. Our students were able to explore genetic traits, waves and energy transfer, and erosional patterns through the equipment purchased with the funds.

Ms. Garabito - 7th grade Language Arts

In Ms. Garabito’s 7th grade language arts classes the students have been working to understand the elements of a strong narrative.  Students had the opportunity to work in small groups to develop and perform a skit that illustrated point of view.  The skit involved only a narrator telling us the story while the others performed.  We have several budding actors!  The students had a second opportunity to perform their skits, adding dialogue to the situation.  Adding dialogue is a skill that authors use to move their stories along, make the story more interesting, and help the reader to understand the characters.  We will be using this technique along with several others as we begin writing our own narratives.

Mr. Vernacotola - 7th grade Language Arts

Room 104 at Highland Middle School is a place where reading and writing are practiced and valued on a daily basis. As part of the balanced literacy program, students in Mr. Vernacotola's seventh grade Language Arts classes are currently participating in literature circles. Groups of students are reading and discussing high interest novels in a small group setting. The current novels being read are: In My Enemy’s House by Carol Matas (Historical Fiction – Holocaust), Sarny: A Life Remembered by Gary Paulsen (Historical Fiction – Slavery), The Dark Side of Nowhere by Neil Shusterman (Science Fiction – Humanity), and The Giver by Lois Lowry (Science Fiction – Utopian Society). The literature circle unit will take approximately 4 weeks. Each group will be responsible for a final literature response project based on their reading and group discussions.

Mr. Vernacotola's fourth/fifth period Language Arts class is teaming up with the students in Mrs. Walker's Multi-Handicapped class. The new "buddies" will work together for half an hour each Friday. Mr. Vernacotola's students look forward to assisting Mrs. Walker's students with important life skills
