"School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self management, self advocacy, and learning."

A note from Mrs. Eaton:
I am available to parents and staff for any questions related to health issues. Feel free to call or e-mail with questions or concerns. I use parent volunteers for some activities, let me know if you are interested.
Responsibilities of the nursing office include:
* Helping to develop health plans for students with special health needs (please call me, if your child has health needs that need to be addressed in school).

Vision Screening
Vision exams will be done on all students in grades 1-8 in October and November. If we have a concern about your child’s vision, you will receive a letter. If you have concerns about your child’s eyes or vision, at any time, feel free to call me. Financial help is available for eye exams and glasses for those who qualify. The process is a simple one, so please call if you need assistance.

Notes from Nurse Eaton
Many times parents and staff have questions about children whose eyes are red and/or irritated. The following information should be helpful.
Children with "pink eye" can get germs on their hands by rubbing their eyes. Then, they leave the germs on the objects they touch and other children can pick up the germs and transfer them to their eyes. We may send a younger child home immediately because they touch many items that are used by everyone in the room. An older child, who does not share common items with others and has better control over what they touch, may be allowed to stay in school, if they are comfortable. Any student who keeps rubbing their eyes will be sent home, unless we have confirmation that the conjunctivitis is allergic.
