Mission Statement:
The mission of Portage Elementary School is to do our best, solve problems, be responsible and
respectful in a safe environment.
Curriculum:
In addition to an emphasis on reading, phonics and writing, Portage Elementary offers curriculum
which includes math, science, social studies, health, art, music, and physical education. Our
curriculum is aligned with state learning competencies and proficiency skills.
Reading Program:
Our building focus has been on balanced literacy in all classrooms. Balanced literacy using integrative
units, small group activities, authentic experiences, and reflective assignments. This approach used
consistently in the refinement of our literacy processes and Language Arts content standards map are key
to increasing student performance. The OhioReads grant provides tutors and volunteers working
with low-achieving students evidenced through pre-testing measures. We will continue our balanced literacy focus to maintain our increased performance on the third grade achievement state test and fourth
grade Ohio Proficiency Tests.
Parent Involvement:
The Portage Support Group (PSG) provides great support for the school, staff, and students. Parents are always welcome at Portage and many have volunteered their time to tutor or assist in a variety of other
ways for the school. Fund raising activities are sponsored and special activities are planned during
non-instructional time to further promote the "family atmosphere" at our school.
Community Partnerships:
Cox Funeral Home, Magic City Kiwanis and Subway
What Makes Our School Outstanding:
Portage Elementary School is outstanding because school leadership, parents, teachers and students are
all working toward the same goal: To increase the academic achievement of ALL students. We believe
ALL students can learn and it is our mission to provide them with every opportunity to achieve. Students
are involved in student council, safety patrol, art and chess club. Students are recognized for their
efforts at an academic breakfast and award assemblies. Scholastic Reading Counts (a reading
incentive computer program for grades 3, 4 and 5), OhioReads tutors for the Barberton business
community, Pizza Hut's Book-It Program for all grades, and Subway's Academic Renaissance Program
rewarding students for academic excellence provide students with incentives to read. Portage
