Mission Statement
Although space is very limited, intra-district open enrollment applications will be available beginning Monday, May 19, 2008 at 7:30 AM at the Administration Building.  These applications will be accepted until 4:00 PM on Friday, May 30, 2008. 

Inter-district open enrollment forms will be available to those families already enrolled in Barberton who have a sibling that needs a new placement.  For inter-district open enrollment, birth certificates of the siblings are needed to verify open enrollment status. Also needed is proof of residency; utility bill, rent agreement, etc. for home school.  No driver’s license accepted.

Superintendent's Message

Hello and welcome to the Barberton City School District web site. It is our hope that this page provides you with helpful information about the Barberton City Schools. The Magics have much to offer!

The Barberton City School District is located in the city of Barberton, Ohio. Barberton is located in the northeastern part of Ohio and is near the city of Akron. Barberton covers approximately 8.91 miles and is the fourth largest city in Summit County with a population of around 28,000 people.

The Barberton City School District has a Head Start program at the Decker Headstart building, 5 K-5 elementaries, 2 middle schools and a high school. Three of the districts 8 schools have been rated effective by the Ohio Department of Education report card rating system.

The district offers a gifted and talented program housed at Portage Elementary; alternative education programs housed at UL Light Middle School, Highland Middle School, and Barberton High School; and numerous honors and AP courses.

The district receives numerous grants for innovative programs including GAR Foundation grants and Ohio Reads grants. Three buildings have received a Literacy Improvement Grant (Ohio Reads).

The district serves approximately 4,045 students.

 
Ohio Achievement Test Scores

The Barberton Schools are excited about the positive changes in our preliminary test results in a variety of grade levels and subject areas.

 

For the first time, the third grade scores on the Ohio Achievement Tests met the state requirements.  The district 3rd grade reading score is a 78.1% and the math score is 80.1%. 

 

The third graders are the students who have experienced all the curriculum and instructional changes made by teachers and administrators beginning in their Kindergarten year. 

 

Fourth grade reading rose from 67% to 75.3%.  The highest gains were achieved by Johnson and Portage students.  Seventh grade reading had a slight gain from 76% to 77.8% with ULL actually scoring 81.4%. 

 

The highest gain for grade 7 was in math.  The district score went from 48% to 70.9% .  Highland Middle School went from 39% to 62%  and ULL Middle School went from 56% to 79.3%.  The seventh grade writing score for the district was 81.1%

 

Eighth grade reading scores went from 75% to 79.4%. 

 

The district graduation rate was 77.5% last year; BHS graduation rate was 81.9% last year.  This year the district graduation rate is 90.1%.

 

UL Light is rated as an effective school.  All other district buildings are rated as Continuous Improvement.
